OpenSim Gains Compatibility With More Viewers, VastPark To Come

Article at VWN gives some hint of one of the various ambitions we've been working towards: compatibility with the OpenSim server.

Very cool.

Thanks for the update. It will be very nice to see that go live. :)

The interoperability between VastPark and OpenSim has been hinted for a while now, would it be possible to expand on VastPark's aims in this regard? For example is this just a matter of the VP viewer being able to log onto an OpenSim or are we talking working towards 'gridnaught' style inter sim/park avatar teleport/transitioning with user inventory database access etc... (eg: could we ever expect interoperability on a level where a VastPark park can exist as part of the/a OpenSim 'hypergrid')

cheers

Hi Andrew,

Step one is to have OpenSim host IMML and manage multi-user connectivity in much the same way as the VastPark Server does. To date we already have it hosting IMML with the next step being live data connection.

As for VastPark interop in greater depth, this is something we're still nutting out.

@miscellany: We're not yet in a position where we can be sure because OpenSim is attempting to redefine itself as something more than Second Life. They want to be a project in the style of the Apache server.

As they move towards a more agnostic approach, they'll end up reworking much of their existing architecture. Each step they take, they will become a project that we can do more and more with. For now there's various SL legacy issues they need to address to become what they can ultimately be.

My hope is that there will come a day an OpenSim server can consume and export a number of different formats, one of them being our IMML metadata. A VastPark client could also have a plugin developed that renders Prims. I'm hopeful for some sort of eventual Prims specification which might mean this could eventually be integrated in a very nice way. For now, we're going step by step towards real interoperability between very different platforms.

It's all looking very positive.
